Moonshadow

Here is the product description from Amazon...

One of the most ground-breaking and literate comic series of all-time is finally collected in one mammoth volume, showcasing the very best in modern storytelling and painted artwork. This adult fairy tale is a work that evokes comparison with Lewis Carroll & William Blake. Born in an intergalactic zoo and raised on the romantic works of Byron and Shelley, Moonshadow is suddenly kicked out of his home at the age of fourteen into an uncaring cosmos. He embarks on a journey which takes him not only to different planets, but also to the farthest reaches of the human heart. That is just about as good of a heads up as your going to get... The thing that they don't do is tell you how special the artwork in this book is... That's why I'm posting some examples here.

This may well be the only graphic novel I have ever seen that effectively deals with the concept of spiritual awakening. I think it's because the artists involved: Jon J. Muth, Kent Williams and George Pratt are creating visual metaphor with every brushstroke.

All throughout this work the writer and artists are willing to tackle tough artistic challenges. They not only attempt to convey what things like death, war and existential angst are all about, they even grapple with what it really means to loose one's innocence.

There are great explanations found in this book that speak to the whimsical nature of the universe and there are also images and tales that demonstrate the banality of evil...

It reminds me of reading William Blake's Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience back to back... Except this is more timely and accessible...
